Optimal blackjack play at Joe Fortune

Want to know which game has the best odds for you to win real money? I’ll give you a clue. It’s not Solitaire. It’s Blackjack. Why? Because it has a measly house edge of 0.5%. The playing field is practically even – and even more so when you apply an optimal strategy.

If you’ve ever wanted to know how to play online Blackjack the right way, this is how you do it. Our online Blackjack guide will show you the ways of the wise and rich. We’ll show you the rules, strategies, and tips so you can know how to play online Blackjack like a pro.

Let’s go.

How Online Blackjack Works

The game is simple. Your job is to beat the Dealer with a better hand. We’ll get into how you play in a minute. First, let’s talk about how you get paid. The payouts you get are based on your hand.

These are what the payouts look like:

  • You win with a Blackjack (A + 10/J/Q/K): 3:2
  • You win with a better hand: 1:1
  • It’s a Tie: You get your money back (Push)
  • It’s a Defeat: You lose your bet

Standard Online Blackjack Rule

Now, as we mentioned before, the house edge when playing online Blackjack for real money is 0.5%. But if you want to take advantage of said ‘edge’, you have to play it right. If you don’t, the house edge is more like 2%.

That means you need to follow the ground rules. Luckily they’re pretty straightforward, and any online Blackjack guide will describe the same process. But I reckon I say it better.

Let’s start with the values of the cards:

  • 1 to 9: Nominal value
  • 10 to K: 10
  • A: 1 or 11 depending on the convenience

Next, there are two types of hands. Hard totals, and Soft totals.

A Hard total is the combination of any number without an A. A Soft total is an A plus any numbers except for 10/J/Q/K.

Your goal here is to beat the Dealer without surpassing 21. If you do, then you’ll lose automatically. And the same applies to the Dealer.

Optimal Online Blackjack Strategy

Taking care of your bankroll at Joe Fortune

Before you can dive in and play online Blackjack for real money, you really should take care of one thing: your bankroll. If you don’t have enough money set aside, that means you don’t have enough money to leverage. I’d slip you a few twenties, but then I’d have to lend cash to all my guests. And I may be Mr Fortune, but I still have a mortgage to pay down. So: you should decide on a monthly budget to play with. Keep your stakes within 0.5-1% of your bankroll. And most importantly, don’t chase losses. Let it go, mate. Know when to fold ‘em.

Think you’ve processed all that? Awesome – I say you’re ready to dominate online Blackjack for real money.

Let’s talk about when to Hit, and when to Stand.

This is how it’s done based on the Dealer’s hand and your hand:

When should you Hit or Stand?
Your Card Dealer’s Card Action
5-7 Any HIT
8 2-4 or 7-A HIT
9 7-A HIT
10 10 or A HIT
12 2, 3, or 7-A HIT
13-16 7-A HIT
A-2 to A-5 2, 3 or 7-A HIT
A-6 7-A HIT
A-7 9 and 10 HIT
12 4, 5 or 6 STAND
13-16 2-6 STAND
17-21 ANY STAND
A-7 2, 7, 8 and A STAND
A-8 2-5 and 7-A STAND
A-9 and A-10 ANY STAND

Now, when should you Double Down? Online Blackjack guide, to the rescue! It starts with Hard totals:

  • Always double down when you have an 11
  • Double down if you have a 10 and the Dealer has any card from 2 to 9
  • Double down if you have a 9 and the Dealer has a 3, 4, 5 or 6

Soft totals are also a good opportunity to Double Down. Like this:

  • Double down if you have an A-6 and the Dealer has a 3, 4, 5 or 6
  • Double down if you have an A-5 or A-4 and the Dealer has a 4, 5 or 6
  • Double down if you have an A-3 or A-2 and the Dealer has a 5 or 6.

And finally, we have when to Split. When you have a Pair in your hand, this is when you should Split:

  • Always split 8s
  • Split 2s, 3s or 7s if the Dealer has an 8, 9, 10 or A
  • Split 6s if the Dealer has a card from 2 to 6
  • Don’t split 4s, 5s, or 10s (J/Q/K as well)

Splitting A-A is a controversial topic. If you do, then there’s a 52% chance that one of your hands will become a Blackjack. But it does come at a higher risk. If you want to play it safe, then you should Hit or Stand based on the situation.

There you have it. The mad skills to beat the house with online Blackjack for real money. Now you’ll know how to play online Blackjack, right? Sing out if you get stuck… I guess the only thing that’s left is to deposit and play now.
